Een jonge vrouw van rond de 20 heeft dus "in an act of incredible cool" vier Wachovia filialen overvallen terwijl ze aan het bellen was met haar GSM.

Van de meest recente hold-up, 4 november in Ashburn, zijn videobeelden. De vrouw lijkt ongeïnteresseerd een doos geld in ontvangst te nemen terwijl ze aan het bellen was.

"This is the first time that I can recall where we've had a crime committed while the person was using a cell phone" aldus Kraig Troxell, de woordvoerder van Loudoun County sheriff.
"The question would be whether anyone is on the other end of the line or not", aldus een vertwijfelde Troxell.

The phone bandit sloeg een eerste maal toe in Vienna, Virginia op 12 oktober. Bij de roof in Ashburn zou de vrouw een revolver getoond hebben. "Then she handed over a note demanding cash, with the phone still firmly attached to her ear", aldus Troxell.

Volgens de woordvoerster van Fairfax County police, allitererende initiaal Mary Mulrenan, heeft ze bij één van de overvallen enkele woorden gewisseld met de bankbediende. "She was well-spoken, in English, with a light Hispanic accent," aldus Mulrenan. "The huge leap that we're making is that she's talking to somebody who knows what's going on - possibly a lookout."

De hamvraag is nu volgens Kraig Troxell : "Is she talking to someone, or using it to make herself look less noticeable or nonchalant as she approaches the teller?".

Fred Desroches, een professor sociologie van de University of Waterloo in Canada, heeft 80 bankovervallers geïnterviewd. "You don't really need a partner to quietly rob a bank. You don't get that much money, and then you have to split it", aldus Desroches, die dus betwijfelt dat de phone bandit een medeplichtige heeft.
